The Artist

Joseph A. Yerkovich — Fine Art Photographer

FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHER

Joseph A. Yerkovich

“Nature has always been the masterpiece. My purpose is to chase her most extraordinary moments and preserve them for the world to feel.”

THE BEGINNING

Born in Croatia and raised along the coast of South Florida, Joseph A. Yerkovich grew up between two worlds defined by water. The Adriatic shaped his earliest memories. The Atlantic forged his identity. From childhood, the ocean was never simply a backdrop. It was a calling.

Captivated by the pioneering work of Jacques-Yves Cousteau, Joseph immersed himself in marine biology, driven by a need to understand the ocean’s intricate ecosystems and the fragile balance holding it all together. But studying the sea from the surface was never going to be enough.

INTO THE DEEP

At twelve years old, Joseph earned his SCUBA certification, and the underwater world opened before him in ways no book or documentary could convey. The sheer beauty and abundance of life beneath the surface left him speechless. Nothing was ever the same after that.

As his obsession deepened, Joseph discovered freediving, the art of descending on a single breath. Without the noise of tanks or regulators, he could move through the water with a stillness that allowed marine life to accept his presence rather than flee from it. This discipline became the foundation of his photographic practice: patience, presence, and an intimate respect for the creatures he photographs.

Every underwater image Joseph creates is taken on a single breath. A method that demands absolute calm and rewards it with moments of extraordinary connection between artist and subject.

BEYOND THE OCEAN

While the ocean remains at the heart of his work, Joseph’s lens has carried him far beyond the waterline. Over the past decade, he has traveled the world chasing the moments most people never get to witness. From the volcanic landscapes of Hawaii to the ancient depths of the Grand Canyon, from the stillness of desert dunes to encounters with apex predators in the wild.

Whether beneath the waves or standing at the edge of a canyon at dawn, his approach remains the same: seek out the extraordinary, wait for that perfect collision of light and moment, and capture it with the precision and reverence it deserves.

THE VISION

For Joseph, fine art photography is not about documenting nature. It is about translating its power into something you can feel. Each image is meant to put you there, to feel the same awe and stillness that stopped him in that moment.

Every piece in the J.A.Y. Depth collection exists because these places and creatures are worth fighting to protect.
